Rothschild, Edmond de
(1845-1934)
   French philan-thropist and art collector, son of James de Rothschild. He and his wife, Adelaide, were interested in Jewish affairs. When the first Zionist pioneers in Palestine appealed to Rothschild for assistance, he supported the colonization of Palestine. He sent agricultural experts and officials there to help in the settlement process, visited Palestine himself five times (1887,1893, 1899, 1914, 1925), and purchased 125,000 acres of land in the country. In 1900 he transferred the management of the colonies to the ICA. Later he served as the honorary president of the Jewish Agency.
